Singing to a broken heart
“You’ll probably think this is crazy but...last night, I was asking God if there was anything else to look forward to for me,” Brenda stated while holding her little furry friend Hodges in her arms.
Observing her as she struggled to stand up to say goodbye was painful. The combination of her depression and her 200+ pounds issue had led her to a corner where she couldn’t see any way out.
Still, I knocked on her door the following day. First drop, first side street, first door that responded.
Minutes later, I was sitting in her floor, legs crossed, talking things out and (attempting to) singing for her the song “Come Thou Fountain of Every Blessing” while playing with Hodges (a dog she herself rescued some time earlier).
Coming from a background filled with food problems and the darkness of depression, her confession was so real and so close to my own heart.
Paul once told the Ephesians—“For we are God's masterpiece, created in [Christ Jesus] to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life” (Eph 2:10). And if that means coming out of my own comfort zone for a few weeks, then why not?
What song will you sing to a broken heart close to you today?
