A Missionary

“...As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!’” (Rom 10:15)

MISSIONARY – A single synonym for adventure, traveling, jet-lag, luggage, camera, new cultures, different languages, exotic food, new aromas, vast nature, endless roads, deep rivers, open land, shiny starry skies, possible danger, restful assurance, loving service, peace, human beings, new horizons, foreign countries, and more.

As I approach the beginning of my mission trip to Kenya, I find myself meditating on the reason WHY I am who I am and why I do what I do. One thing came to my mind: the center of it all rests upon a single rock, the Cornerstone, called JESUS CHRIST. The One who worked as a humble carpenter, the One that healed the needy (blind, lepers, invalid, etc), the One that fed the hungry (five thousand and more) and gave water to the thirsty (the woman at the well); the One who comforted the heart-broken (Lazarus’ family and the widow who lost her son), the One that never cared for social status or conditions (as He spoke not only with Nichodemus but also with the Gerasene demoniac), and even the One who did nothing but to love the outcasts (among them, Mary Magdalene).

I was one of them. I was blind and He made me see. I was hungry and He gave me the bread of life. I was thirsty and He gave me living water. I was heart-broken and He mended my wounds. I was poor in Spirit and He lifted up my spirit. I was an outcast and He made me part of His wonderful family. In summary, I was dead inside and He gave me abundant life instead. I was a captive and He set me free. This is the gospel of peace, and this is the tidings of good things. How beautifully crazy can that be?

As John clearly stated, “we love because God first loved us.” By word and by action, our purpose is to “be [His] witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Isn’t that reason good enough to be a “missionary”? What are you doing for Jesus today? ;)

“Here I am Lord, send me.” (1 Sam 3:4)
