Avenues of the Soul
“Guard well the avenues of the soul.” {1MCP 107.3}

STEREOTYPES (STs) — defined as “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.”
Now, let me tell you about the strongest source of STs I’ve ever met—media.
As an addict in recovery, I’ll specifically point out to TV and the internet. As a missionary in Kenya, I’ll specifically point out and break down 3 common STs about Africa:
- “There’re NO dying children in every corner.” At least not here where we find crops in abundance and children happily running under the sun despite the most primitive living conditions.
- “Malaria (M) can ONLY be fatal if not taking precautions.” The M mosquitos are out only during night time. Hence, we actually use repellent as well as nets which protect us while we sleep during that time.
- “Predators are NOT constantly going after their preys.” In fact, the biggest or even the most dangerous animals (lions, hippos, giraffes, etc) are enclosed in national parks, and you have to pay to enter.
Let me clarify here. No, I don’t pretend to generalize the matter for I’ve only seen 1% of this continent, and no, I won’t pretend this isn’t one of the most needy places on earth either (if not the #1). But, POINT BEING: “Don’t believe everything you see or hear. Don’t allow stereotypes to shape your thinking.” It happened to me and it’s not fun. You suffer a lot. For that reason, I suggest you—INFORM yourself. Use trustworthy sources. Better instead, EXPERIENCE for yourself by going to places. BE A MISSIONARY and make a difference. If you allow them, STs together with misconceptions could prevent you not only from the greatest adventures you might ever have, but also from meeting wonderful people. Or even more. They could prevent you from experiencing God in a personal and intimate way due to the wrong image.
Will you believe those two...STILL?
