Fearless
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!” (John 8:36)
SHUKA — Also known as the “African Blanket” which is worn by the Maasai tribe located mainly in the East side of the country. They are famous for their high stature and their extreme fierceness. As culture would have it, they can fight and kill lions with nothing but a spear.
But, to be honest, what calls my attention the most is that, apart from being a piece of clothing, the shuka also serves as an instrument for a wide variety of purposes. Two of them stood out to me: it protects the person from the hot rays of sun, and it also reveals the person’s identity no matter where they are. People can recognize you from long distances long before you reach anywhere.
This made me think. King David said once that the Lord is “our fortress, our protection, our refuge. A present help in time of trouble” (Ps. 18; 46; 94). John, on the other hand, mentions that everyone will know that “we are His disciples because we love one another” without any kind of distinction.
Therefore, in my conclusion, Jesus is our “Shuka.” He is my protection, and in Him I find my identity without caring in which part of the world I am. Yes! Freedom indeed.
I am happy then that He makes me a “spiritual Maasai”; He not only makes me reach the highest stature in His eyes but also the fearless warrior I am meant to be. Aren’t you?
